Considering ACN as your next adventure? Let the ACN staff and faculty share their favorite spots in Moss to help you get to know your new home town!
Heidi Benjaminson - Academic Advisor
Having lived all over the world, it takes a bit to impress Heidi - but she has found some favorite things here in Moss:
- The best place to get coffee in town is the ‘Laughing Brewdah’ coffee van that you’ll find on Moss High street. Check them out on Instagram to know when they’ll be around - my coffee order is usually one of their specialty flavored lattes - It’s delicious!
- For something cool and unusual - head down to Sjøbadet to look at the ‘Keepers of the Faith’ or ‘Smilefjes’ sculptures out in the water. They were made by the local artist Bruce Naigles, and you’ll see them popping out of the water 30 metres offshore.
3. As a thrifting fiend, I also have to recommend the local thrift stores - for example you’ll find Happy Hand one floor below our campus building. Perfect spot for a treasure hunt!
Mike Nitz - ACN Faculty
After many visits and long stays in Moss, Mike has some key recommendations for places to visit in Moss:
- Hiking around Jeløy- you can take the ferry, sit on a beach, see the old farms with stone fences and tree-lined lanes
- Hiking up to Bjørnasbatteriet-great view over Moss and harbor, some history, great picnic spot
- Hanging out around the falls, especially during heavy river flow time - near the dorms, you can also see Konventionsgården!
Robin Smith - ACN Faculty
Robin, having lived in Norway for several years now, has some great ideas for places that will spark creativity!
- Alby- Cafe Rød- the art gallery and the koi pond there, F15's cafe and writing corner with a view of the fjord, the beaches, and the local farms with baby lambs and foals.
- Thrifts & Flowers: Karusell & Fiori, beautiful flowers and funky records and fun books/gems
- Hos Naboen-- for an ice cream and a ginger beer in the summer, and delicious food!
Krista Lauritzen - Executive Director
Having lived in Moss for as long as ACN has been around, Krista sure has some good tips for getting to know the city.
- Møllebyen (renovated mill area) and the next door neighbor, Verket (former closed industrial area turned public area). The library, cafés, movie theaters, restaurants, apartments and grassy open spaces next to the fjord.
- Støtvig Hotel in Larkollen. Built in the New England style, it houses fantastic restaurants, a spa, a bowling alley and more. The pool has one of the sharks used in the movie "Jaws" hanging on the wall and a movie theater which is a replica of the one in the White House. It's located right on a beach and marina. Beautiful views from the hotel and from the pool, which are both indoors and outdoors. The buffet itself is worth the trip!
3. The art scene! Tons of galleries, sculptures, street art, oh my! Moss is the city in Norway with the most public sculptures. Artists from Munch to Wigeland have works here and many other parts of Norway. Something for everyone.
Colin Solaas - Resident Assistant
Having worked and lived in Moss for many years, Colin knows the city quite well. Still, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to any former ACN’ers that when asked about his favorite spot - his answer is:
1. Obviously one of my favorite things to do in Moss is play hockey so the ice rink, Moss Ishall. The website for the hockey club is https://kraakene.no/
Tonje Kristiansen - Marketing & Event coordinator
Having grown up in Moss, I know about some gems in Moss. For this occasion, I’ll have to stick with the classics:
- Vansjø - the lake which is close to the town centre - and goes on for ages inland. It is the perfect place to get away - you’ll find the most peaceful and beautiful places only a short canoe trip or hike away. It is so accessible, both for day trips and camping!
- The most charming spot to get coffee and a sweet treat during summer is Kallum Gård. It is only open during the weekends in summertime, but it is such a cute spot. They also serve Rømmegrøt!
- Ice Skating at the Moss Pavilion - this is such a great winter activity! The area is lit up with Christmas lights and disco light, and music on a speaker system. It's actually going to be the backdrop for scenes from Season 3 of Netflix's 'Home for Christmas'! Bring hot chocolate and friends for the coziest evening!
Susan Joel - ACN Faculty
Over two semesters, Susan has spent plenty of time exploring Moss - often by bike. This is a great way to get to know Moss, and let’s her give you the following recommendations:
- Walk (or bike!) along the fjord - ‘ Kyststien’ takes you on a beautiful path with a scenic view of the ocean and beautiful landscapes. Along the previously mentioned path you will find the renowned contemporary art gallery - ‘Galleri F15’. Situated on Jeløy Island, it is set in a picturesque environment, making it a popular cultural and artistic destination. It also has a quite interesting history. Perfect location for a cup of tea - and you should also try the pastries!
- Moss has great spots for thrifting, and you’ll find some real gems if you’re up for a treasure hunt! Try Evangeliesenteret Bruktbutikk - it’s where you’re likely to find the best selection of hand-knit sweaters, "official" hiking pants, and painted wooden bowls.
- The ACN campus - of course!
